Online English: "Winter Swimming" for one year, how to go ashore?

Text | Blue Whale Education Zhou Jifeng

2019 seems to be a nodal year for online English.

It has been three years since the first online English company went public this year, and six years since the rise of online English.

In 2013, the 4G license was officially released. Since then, online mobile Internet has broadened more usage scenarios, and online English has begun to rise.

In six years, capital rushed in with money. One after another, the financing news, the valuation is higher than the next round, grabbing teachers, students and markets, and the whole industry is booming.

ITutorGroup (vipabc in those days) "got up early to catch up with the late episode", and started to do online in 2004, and it took 13 years for the whole industry to really rise. Huang Jiajia, CEO of 51 Talk, stopped a car in the street of Peking University campus and persuaded Xu Xiaoping to get angel round financing, which opened the way to teach adult English online.

When rushing towards online adult English, I found that the adult English pit was far away. Online children’s English track is the gold mine to be tapped. Despite the "burning money", the growth rate is amazing. VIPKID has set off the banner of 1V1 North American foreign teachers and became a unicorn in three years. The legendary customer acquisition cost is as high as 8,000-10,000 yuan, which has attracted the attention of the whole market.

"Online 1-to-1 scale is not economical, only small classes can balance the cost and delivery", "Double-qualified courses may be the right way" … Everyone is crossing the river by feeling the stones, and many people think that their own model can successfully save the online English track.

What new changes have taken place in the online foreign teacher market after welcoming the winter of education capital and bidding farewell to the crazy development of the past? After the tide of capital recedes, who is swimming naked?

Money is harder to get than in previous years, and some "friends" have fallen behind.

Winter has indeed come.

Compared with previous years, the investment and financing situation of online English has been greatly reduced. Except for going public or being merged, there are only 14 or 15 companies that have obtained financing this year-money is more difficult to get than before. In the past few years, online English has been heated up, and the valuation is high. In 2019, the capital that wants to enter the market is also more cautious. The fever of hot money has gone down, and it has become a consensus to live.

The most striking thing about online English this year is the E-round financing of VIPKID, which was led by Tencent. However, this financing is also quite bumpy, and news of divestment has been reported several times; There is almost no large amount of investment after the D round, and most of them are early financing of some start-ups such as Pre-A round and A round.

This year, online English companies have also "landed", and the seeds sown in 2013 should be harvested six years later. The online English track has opened the road to asset certification, and PE/VC have also ushered in the opportunity to quit. For example, Da Da English, which had previously competed with VIPKID, came to another fork in the road. The eye check shows that the actual controller has become Zhang Bangxin.

(Equity information of Tianyan Chadada English)

IPO is another model. From the situation in 2019, this exit road is not smooth, and several companies that have reported IPO news have no follow-up. ITutorGroup was eventually invested by Ping An and incorporated into its ecosystem.

In the fierce competition, online English market resources and traffic gradually concentrate on the head. A number of relatively mature players have emerged, such as VIPKID, 51Talk, iTutorGroup and so on.

Of course, there are also many friends who have fallen behind. You don’t run fast at first, but you can win in the end; And overtaking in corners may not necessarily win.

In May 2018, today’s headlines entered the online one-on-one track, and gogokid was launched in a low-key manner. Its official website shows that it provides one-to-one courses for children aged 4-12, which are purely North American teachers and foreign teachers. Gogokid refers to VIPKID in both mode and curriculum system. However, a year later, gogokid did not seem to exert too much force on the recognized traffic advantage. On the contrary, there were frequent internal changes, and layoffs broke out in April this year.

Under the cold winter of educational capital, no one can do it once and for all.

Three major changes in online English industry

The online English track of "Winter Swimming" has to survive in change.

After a year’s observation, Blue Whale Education found several major changes in the online English industry:

First, with the continuous verification of the market model, online adult English has been fleeing, but junior English has begun to rise; Second, the market sinking is accelerating, and the third, fourth and fifth tier cities have become new battlefields; Third, the mode discussion is no longer, and each family practices internal strength to improve operational efficiency.

1. Online adult English is constantly fleeing, and junior English is beginning to rise.

According to the statistics of Blue Whale Education, there is no adult English company among more than a dozen companies that received financing in 2019. In fact, several institutions of all in Adult English were all transformed into children’s English.

Under the strong man’s broken wrist, Companion English got the C round of financing. After 51Talk comprehensively transformed children’s English, the loss was shrinking.

Relying on the fluency of "AI+ Education" listing, the stock price has been falling all the way. In the latest quarterly financial report, it is fluent that the loss has doubled to 210 million yuan, and the growth of paying users has almost stagnated.

The reason is that the growth rate of adult language training market is far behind that of children’s English. Adults have a strong purpose in learning language, short learning cycle, short online immersion time, fragmented preferences and diversified learning needs, which determine that their ability to renew fees and rigid needs are far less than those of teenagers.

In adult language training, the participants showed a rapid unilateral decline, from 174,000 in 2013 to 66,000 in 2019, with an average annual decline of 15%.

The online adult English track is constantly fleeing. At the same time, among the nearly ten financing events this year, there are still three early financing events, all of which are online enlightenment English.

In other words, the opportunity of online English is still there.

Even leading players like VIPKID have a very limited share. The field of education and training is different from other fields, and there is no winner. However, the highland of online 1V1 high-end market has been occupied, and enterprises need to provide sufficiently differentiated products and services to gain a firm foothold.

Early childhood enlightens English as a game breaker. Children’s English learning in China tends to be younger. The average age of students in first-tier cities is about 6 years old, and the average age of students in second-tier cities is 6.5 years old. More and more parents begin to think about English education before their children are 3 years old.

Young children don’t need live classes, which makes the guest unit price low and the running light. Parents don’t need to spend a lot of energy and cost to think about whether to buy courses or not. Therefore, the intensity of marketing is relatively much smaller, and the cost of marketing and customer acquisition is low. For example, after the first month of the online paid course, the Enlightenment English is said to have achieved profit.

2. Sinking the market and expanding at the right time.

If the hottest word in 2019 is "sinking", the development of Pinduoduo shows people the power beyond the Five Rings. In the case of saturation of first-tier cities, various families have targeted fourth-and fifth-tier cities, and the education industry is no exception.

In the first-tier cities such as Beijing, the participation rate has reached more than 70% a long time ago, while the participation rate in second-and third-tier cities is only over 10%. The penetration rate of online education in non-first-tier cities is not high, less than 10%-a vast world with great potential.

Guangzheng Hang Seng pointed out in the research report that the current overall pattern of first-tier cities is indeed in a relatively stable state, but from the perspective of the entire online children’s English market, the penetration rate is rapidly increasing, and the sinking market space is still expanding. The shortage of offline training resources in third-tier and lower-tier cities and the change of users’ learning style bring historic opportunities to online mode.

Avoid high customer acquisition costs in first-and second-tier cities and avoid competition with head enterprises. For example, 51Talk, which decided to turn the car around to speed up the sinking last year, achieved breakeven in its 1V1 business to a certain extent; For example, acaso, which has been aiming at third-and fourth-tier cities, successfully won the C+ round of financing this year.

Even start-ups are aware of the importance of sinking. For example, Bobby English, who just finished financing this year, mainly focuses on sinking, and the main purpose of financing is to expand the sinking market and improve the curriculum system.

In the future, sinking is still on the road.

3. It doesn’t matter the mode, but the operational efficiency is the key.

2019 is a year of ups and downs for the education industry, and the mode of online education has also become the focus of discussion in the industry.

One-to-one courses can teach students in accordance with their aptitude and strengthen listening, speaking and interest quality. In addition to the interaction between students and teachers, small class increases the interaction between students and is more suitable for improving reading and writing ability and thinking training. Large classes need to be equipped with top teachers, suitable for learning vocabulary, grammar and basic knowledge. AI is the most intelligent and efficient way, but it is biased towards practice and repetitive learning.

Which mode is the most suitable? All sides are arguing. Live classes, recording and broadcasting classes, dual-teacher courses, and AI assistance seem to be defining online education.

Looking at the enterprises that can survive in 2019, it seems that the debate about which existing model has been reduced. They are all studying how to standardize teaching, how to personalize teaching, how to refine services, and begin to pay attention to profit model and cost structure. Previously, the online 1-to-1 model of VIPKID was once rumored that "the cost of each customer acquisition is as high as 8,000-10,000 yuan", but its founder Mi Wenjuan recently said in an open dialogue that the average cost of a single customer acquisition of the company is now 4,000 yuan.

The essence behind the high cost of obtaining customers is the promotion of capital, and everyone wants to quickly produce a "behemoth", and one is the only one. Under the mode of burning money, the retention rate, conversion rate and renewal rate of institutions are low, and the cost of obtaining customers is high.

Nowadays, the education capital is in the cold winter, and the pure To VC model is difficult to last long. Regardless of one-on-one, personalization, large class and middle class, parents’ expectations should be achieved in the end; Secondly, refined management; Finally, personalized service, the ratio of tutors and lecturers, etc., these factors have the ultimate influence and help to Laxin and renew customers.

29 years old completely destroyed! 130 million contracts change to basic salary! The first center in the East is just a brush.

The fading out of Zhuang Shen’s name

Zhuang Shen, formerly known as Drummond Green, is 29 years old and is an outstanding.

centre

Players. However, in the past few years, his name has not appeared on people’s lips as frequently as before. In the offseason this year, Zhuang Shen decided to return to the Bulls and execute a contract worth $3.6 million next season. This decision makes people think about the trend of his career and his glory.

Zhuang Shen’s choice is wise, because if he tries to test the free market, he can only get the basic salary, rather than staying in the bull to get more reward. Nevertheless, Zhuang Shen still showed his strength in this year’s training camp. He is famous for his unique dribbling skills and singles ability, and has defeated his opponent bagley many times. This kind of singles skill is impressive, but in the NBA regular season next season, few head coaches will allow him to play in this way.

Zhuang Shen also served as a coach in the training camp and gave valuable advice to young players. He stressed that,

basketball

The team doesn’t care how many rebounds the players get or how many three points they make, but more importantly, whether the players can become good teammates. This sentence is reasonable to some extent, because the success of the team depends not only on individual ability, but also on the cooperation and tacit understanding between players. Zhuang Shen’s example also proves this point. Although his personal ability is superior, his performance did not meet people’s expectations due to his personality and role on the field.

The Dominance and Limitation of Zhuang Shen

Zhuang Shen has shown great dominance in the past season, and he is among the best in rebounding, stealing and blocking. He has repeatedly created a record of more than 20 rebounds, and he has always been on this data list. However, despite such excellent data performance, Zhuang Shen’s dominance on the court does not seem to leave a deep impression on the fans.

Looking back on the 2015-2016 season, Zhuang Shen performed well in the Pistons, averaging 16.2 points, 14.8 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game, which made him the rebounding king, and he was selected as the best team in the Three Arrays and All-Star Match, becoming the top player in the Eastern Region at that time.

centre

. This season is also the reason behind his signing of a five-year $130 million contract with Pistons. However, it is a pity that he was traded to the Cavaliers and frequently changed jobs in the next few seasons, eventually joining the Lakers, Philadelphia and the Nets as a basic salary.

Although Zhuang Shen’s data is efficient, his role in the team does not seem to be outstanding. This made the NBA team have doubts about his value, which eventually led to the embarrassing situation that he could not sign a long-term contract with high salary. Zhuang Shen’s case reminds us of other similar "data stream" players, who can bring beautiful data performance, but can’t create greater victories for the team.

Zhuang Shen’s new departure

Although Zhuang Shen’s career has experienced ups and downs, he is still young and full of infinite potential. As a comprehensive technical person,

centre

He has strong rebounding, stealing and blocking ability. These advantages make him an indispensable part of the team’s lineup.

Zhuang Shen chose to return to the bull, not only because of the consideration of remuneration, but also to show his strength and value again. At the Bulls, he had the opportunity to grow with a young and promising team. Zhuang Shen’s experience and guidance will play a positive role in promoting the growth of young players. His personal experience made him understand that in his career

basketball

In addition to personal ability, there are more important moral character and attitude towards life 2.

Zhuang Shen’s re-starting is not only to prove his value, but also to show his determination to pursue success to the fans. He believes that as long as he maintains a positive attitude and excellent performance, he will certainly win the recognition of the team and fans. Zhuang Shen’s journey in basketball may be tortuous, but his persistence and persistence will make him successful.

Summary and thinking

Although Zhuang Shen’s career has experienced ups and downs, his strength and talent can not be ignored. His outstanding performance in rebounding, stealing and blocking is impressive, but he also faces some limitations in personality and role on the court. Despite this, Zhuang Shen still chose to start again and return to the bull, hoping to prove his value through his own efforts and strength.

The story of Zhuang Shen tells us that,

basketball

Competition is not only a performance of one person, but also the cooperation and tacit understanding of the whole team. As a player, it is important to have a strong personal ability, but what is more important is how to become a good teammate and grow and progress together with his teammates. Only by uniting and helping each other can we create greater success.

For each of us, the experience of Zhuang Shen is also an inspiration. On the road of pursuing our dreams, we may encounter failures and setbacks. But as long as we keep a positive attitude, persist in our efforts and believe in our own abilities, we will certainly be able to overcome difficulties and achieve our goals.

Zhuang Shen’s story also reminds us to pay attention to moral character and attitude towards life. In our career, no matter how excellent our abilities and achievements are, only by being humble and respecting others can we win the recognition and respect of others. As players, we should always remember our responsibilities and become the pride of the team and fans.

Zhuang Shen’s re-starting provides us with a thinking angle: on the road of life, we should go forward bravely, not afraid of difficulties, and always believe in our own ability and value. Only in this way can we meet more challenges and opportunities and achieve our own goals.

Men’s basketball warm-up match: Markkanen scored 24 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 breaks, Finland beat Lithuania 81-79.

Live on August 5 th In a warm-up match of men’s basketball in the early hours of this morning, Markkanen rolled over and missed at the last moment, but his teammates grabbed the rebound in the frontcourt to make up the basket. Finland 81-79 buzzer kills Lithuania.

Markkanen, with a round head, performed brilliantly in the audience, and made a wonderful contribution to the tie-rod anti-buckle & 24 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 breaks, and Varanciunas scored 10 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists.

It is worth mentioning that in the upcoming Men’s Basketball World Cup, Finland is in Group E together with Japan, Germany and Australia.

Conquer! Harland won the championship in the first season of the Premier League and won the Golden Boot Award. The Golden Globe Award is a big hit.

Manchester City won the championship three rounds ahead of schedule, and Harland posted a message on social media to celebrate. In his first season in the Premier League, Harland followed Manchester City to win the championship, and he also broke the single-season scoring record in the Premier League with 36 goals. There is no suspense in winning the Golden Boot Award. Harland finished his conquest in the Premier League in his first season, and now his new goal is to win the FA Cup and the Champions League.

When Manchester City spent 60 million euros to sign Harland, some people questioned that Harland couldn’t adapt to the high intensity of the Premier League. When he saw him wasting opportunities frequently in the Community Shield match with Liverpool, the Norwegian striker was even more ridiculed by the media. But look at Harland’s report card this season. He scored 52 goals and sent 8 assists in 49 appearances for Manchester City, making 60 goals directly. He scored 36 goals in 33 appearances in the Premier League, breaking the single-season scoring record maintained by Shearer and Andy Cole, and the name of "Magic Buo" resounded throughout Europe.

Perhaps Harland didn’t expect that everything went so smoothly after coming to Manchester City. He sent the ball into the opponent’s door again and again, and Manchester City’s victory could not stop at all. Now Manchester City is only two victories away from achieving the triple crown, and the opponents are Manchester United and Inter Milan. Harland can’t wait to contribute to the team. As Manchester City has won the Premier League three rounds ahead of schedule, Guardiola may let Harland take a break, and the Norwegian can play in the FA Cup and Champions League finals with the fullest posture.

If Harland is crowned the triple crown with Manchester City, he will become a strong contender for the Golden Globe Award in 2023. His personal performance has conquered the fans, and he is likely to win the Golden Boot Award in Premier League, Champions League and Europe this season. At present, he has been selected as the best player of the season by the English Journalists Association, and he has also been selected as the official candidate list of the best player of the season and the best young player of the Premier League.

The main competitors for the Golden Globe Award in 2023 are Messi, Mbappé and Harland. Messi has the World Cup champion bonus, and his personal data performance is also very good. The Argentine champion is the most popular, but now Harland is narrowing the gap with Messi. If he wins the triple crown with Manchester City, Harland will have a greater chance, because his personal data and team honor can be well-received. In 2023, the Golden Globe Award will become the PK before Harland and Messi, and Mbappé will be out early. What do you think?

Two news: Shougang team is about to fall apart, and Du Feng has already torn his face.

Text/writing on the world of mortals

In recent seasons, Shougang team’s record is getting worse and worse. Last season, it stopped in the quarter-finals, and this season it stopped in the quarter-finals.

Head coach Leiden

Shougang team is about to fall apart.

The input of each season is inversely proportional to the results of the season. In the CBA league, there are three local tyrants, namely Shougang, Xinjiang and Shanghai. Shougang executives always want to realize the dream of championship, but the championship is always farther and farther away from Shougang team.

Changing coaches has become a common practice of Shougang team. If it is not satisfactory, it will change coaches, and it will change people’s hearts and make the team’s performance decline. Stop the semi-finals this season, and this summer is another wave of coaching changes. Change players!

Song Xiang Weibo Content

According to Song Xiang, a famous basketball reporter, many players in the team have expired contracts, including Fang Shuo, Fan Ziming, Zhang Cairen, Tian Yuxiang, Raymond, Fan Yiming and Yang Ali.

Ramon

According to the well-known blogger "Inspector Zhao of Ball Circle", Raymond will calm down and consider renewing the contract after the contract with Shougang team expires this summer. From Raymond’s words, the possibility of leaving Shougang team is not ruled out. Why should Raymond consider renewing the contract? Is to see if Shougang executives will give him a top salary contract. If they give him a top salary contract, they will renew it. If they don’t, they will pat their ass and leave. Raymond is a very good striker, and he may get a top salary contract in other teams.

Raymond’s performance this season is quite satisfactory, averaging 21.8 minutes, averaging 8 points, 3 rebounds, 0.8 assists and 0.8 steals.

Fan Ziming

There are also players Fan Ziming. In fact, Fan Ziming has some abilities, at least better than Zou Yuchen, Changdong Yu and Sun Tonglin of Beijing Control Team. Fan Ziming’s contract also expires this summer. If Shougang doesn’t renew his contract with the highest salary, Fan Ziming may also leave Shougang.

Fan Ziming’s performance this season is remarkable, averaging 22.3 minutes and 12.8 points per game, ranking 13th in the league, averaging 5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1 steal and 0.5 blocks per game, with comprehensive data. He is a very good inside player.

From Fan Ziming’s words, we can vaguely find the following information.

Fan Ziming said: "I hope that in the future, I can impact the achievements like Zhai Xiaochuan, Fang Shuo and Zhu Yanxi!"

Zhai Xiaochuan averaged 26.8 points per game and 10.5 points per game; Fang Shuo averaged 30.8 minutes per game and 14 points per game; Zhu Yan played 16 minutes per game, averaging 5 points.

Judging from these data, they are not as efficient as Fan Ziming! What are you studying? In fact, I am complimenting these "ball tyrants"!

From this sentence, we can find at least two pieces of information: First, Fan Ziming is obviously suspected of flattery, holding the thick legs of Zhai Xiaochuan, Fang Shuo and Zhu Yanxi. Secondly, Fan Ziming’s own performance was excellent enough, and in turn flattering these three players is enough to prove that these three players play an important role in the team.

Happened in Fang Shuo and Zhai Xiaochuan.

From Fan Ziming’s words, it means that Zhai Xiaochuan, Fang Shuo and Zhu Yanxi are "ball tyrants".

If Shougang’s top management lets the "ball bully" run roughshod over, then the "ball bully" is the accelerator for Shougang’s team to fall apart.

It is no wonder that many basketball reporters have predicted that Shougang’s summer is doomed to be unsettled, and it is also very likely that it will fall apart.

Du Feng, the head coach of Guangdong Province, was furious and tore his face with "Big Brother".

On April 20th, after the Guangdong team lost in the away game against Guangsha team, the big score between the two teams became 1: 1. Guangsha team will play at the home of Guangdong team in the next game. If Guangsha team wins Guangdong team at one go and Du Feng loses the "Battle of Tianwangshan" at home, the joke will be big! It’s no wonder that Du Feng was very angry and furious in this game, and he was torn with the head coach "Big Brother".

When the game went to 5 minutes and 33 seconds in the third quarter, Yi Jianlian made a three-point long-range throw and came out of the basket without anyone defending. Later, Jeff ran to the sidelines to save the ball. Jeff jumped high and grabbed the rebound in the frontcourt. After that, Jeff passed the ball to Yi Jianlian. After Yi Jianlian grabbed the ball, he directly pushed it to Jeff with his hand, while Jeff was still outside the court and had not returned to the court. As a result, a ball that he had originally got was out of bounds, and Yi Jianlian made a mistake.

Du Feng angered Yi Jianlian.

When the Guangdong team paused, Du Feng spat lotus flowers with a tactical board, which was a wave of output to Yi Jianlian, which was obviously rude to Yi Jianlian. In the face of this situation, Yi Jianlian is also trying to wipe his sweat with towels one after another to cover up the embarrassing situation of being scolded. As the "big brother" of the team, Yi Jianlian is indeed older, unable to keep up with his pace and his physical strength has also declined. This game was also fouled five times by the opponent. At ordinary times, Du Feng rarely accused Yi Jianlian, and this time it was Du Feng’s fast break.

In the past, Du Feng always regarded Yi Jianlian as a "buddy". This time, maybe Du Feng was also in a hurry, and he was torn with Yi Jianlian. For the first time, he put himself in the position of head coach and relegated his former "buddy" to the role of a player.

Actually, Yi Jianlian should really retire and leave his position and top salary to young people to exercise. It may also be that Yi Jianlian, out of his love for basketball, is unwilling to leave the court and has deep feelings for the Guangdong team.

Not afraid of the big Paris single-core operation, but afraid of the boss’s control variables.

I am not afraid of the single-core operation in Paris, but I am afraid that Boss Mei will control the variables. If it is an accident that the mother director was injured after missing a penalty in the opening stage, it is more like a silent demonstration that Messi led the team to complete the goal in the second half.

Remember the fans’ cynicism about Messi after losing in the last round in Paris? The team lost the game, but the fans pointed their finger at Messi. Some people doubted Messi’s ability to lead the team. Some even said that Messi had no desire to win after playing the World Cup and was completely flat in the club. However, in this game, without Mbappé, Messi played the level of single-core combat when playing in the World Cup. His excellent overall situation and superb passing repeatedly tore open the opponent’s defense line, and finally helped Barley win the game.

Boss Mei’s panting expression after the game shows that he didn’t lie flat as people say, but tried his best. No wonder some people say that they are not afraid of the single-core operation in Paris, but they are afraid that the coal boss may strengthen the control variables. Messi’s core position in the team is the key to winning in Greater Paris. Let Qiu Wang become Mbappé’s deputy, which will only destroy the last green glory of Boss Mei.

Another giant followed suit, and one shot was five "Wang Huiwen"

Recently, SaaS giant Salesforce announced the launch of a $250 million fund, which is by far the largest AIGC venture capital fund.

In this regard, CEO Clara Shih said that the fund will focus on "cultivating the next generation of artificial intelligence startups".

Some analysts also said that although the generative AI like ChatGPT itself amazed the public. However, their greatest role in the enterprise lies in their combination with the company’s business, which is obviously the goal of Salesforce.

However, judging from today’s stock price performance, the heavy AI did not make this old SaaS manufacturer dead.

250 million US dollars, which has exceeded the net profit of last year.

Different from VC’s pursuit of high returns, as a typical CVC, Salesforce chose to set up the fund at this time more likely because of industry competition and stock price considerations.

We saw that the foundation of the fund was announced at its annual conference TrailblazerDX. At that time, the company announced three major initiatives in generating artificial intelligence:

First, Salesforce is integrating generative artificial intelligence into customer relationship management products under Einstein GPT. These new features are designed to combine the data in Salesforce with a series of generative AI engines (including engines from OpenAI and Cohere), so that customers can seize the initiative in making marketing emails, writing supporting articles and even making computer code.

Second, Salesforce announced its cooperation with OpenAI, which makes ChatGPT available directly from Slack. This function is currently in the testing stage and will be launched on a large scale later this year.

Third, Salesforce Ventures is launching a $250 million investment fund to support generative AI startups.

There are several backgrounds that have to be mentioned behind these three measures.

First of all, on the eve of releasing its new AI product, Salesforce released a survey result, which showed that although some IT leaders expressed concern about AI, most people thought it could help them better support customers and improve data insight. Even 67% of the respondents said that they would give priority to this technology in the next 18 months, and one-third of the respondents thought it would be their top priority.

At the same time, Salesforce believes that it has identified several areas where artificial intelligence is reshaping the sales pattern: artificial intelligence insight of sales, natural language chat robots for service requests, targeted marketing content and personalized e-commerce experience.

Secondly, at the end of last year, after OpenAI’s ChatGPT broadened the imagination of the technology industry, many large companies rushed to announce the function of using artificial intelligence to generate content. Last month alone, Microsoft integrated OpenAI technology into Bing, Google announced the launch of ChatGPT competitor Bard, Meta released one of its large language models under the open source license, and Snapchat launched a social generation tool.

In addition, Microsoft recently launched Dynamic 365 Copilot, a functional assistant tool for customer relationship management (CRM) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) based on artificial intelligence, which directly extended its hand to the territory of traditional enterprise software platforms such as Zoho, Salesforce and IBM.

A consensus in the field of science and technology is that it is often fatal to miss the first advantage of technology, so we have seen Salesforce’s heavy investment in AI.

More importantly, the deployment of AI and the launch of Slack’s new ChatGPT application are at a critical moment when the board members of Salesforce are replaced, and investors have been pushing for new changes. Even at the beginning of this year, the company cut 10% of its employees.

As we all know, affected by the macro-environment, the market value of American SaaS companies suffered a decline in different degrees in 2022, and Salesforce was not spared. Salesforce is also under pressure from investors. Using the white-hot trend of generating artificial intelligence can help companies resist concerns about their growth prospects.

It is worth mentioning that at the beginning of this month, Salesforce released the latest financial report data. According to the financial report, the revenue of Salesforce in fiscal year 2023 was $31.4 billion, an increase of 18% year-on-year. However, the income growth rate has slowed down this fiscal year. Its revenue in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2023 was $8.4 billion, a year-on-year increase of 14%, which was lower than the annual growth rate.

In terms of profit, salesforce’s operating profit in fiscal year 2023 was $1 billion, compared with $500 million in the previous fiscal year, which was significantly improved this fiscal year. This fiscal year, the company’s net profit was $200 million, compared with $1.4 billion in the same period of the previous fiscal year, and the net profit in the latest fiscal year decreased by 86%.

It can be seen that the scale of the AIGC fund has exceeded the net profit of Salesforce last year, which can be seen from the investment.

According to public data, Wall Street analysts agreed that earnings per share (EPS) in the fourth quarter was $1.36. However, the company reported earnings per share of $1.68, far exceeding expectations. In addition, the average income of analysts is estimated to be about $8 billion, while the company’s revenue in the fourth quarter was $8.4 billion.

But despite the amazing revenue growth of Salesforce in recent years, it is expected to achieve the goal of reaching $50 billion in sales in fiscal year 2026. But its share price trend has been developing in the opposite direction. Since December 2020, the company’s share price has plummeted by nearly 30%.

It is not difficult to see that Salesforce is eager for the growth prospects of its performance.

The first four companies to be selected.

Back to Salesforce, the new fund itself. Although the fund is the largest fund of Salesforce Ventures, it is not the first dedicated AI fund. As early as 2017, it raised $50 million for the artificial intelligence innovation fund to support its Einstein artificial intelligence toolset.

According to PitchBook, Salesforce Ventures has participated in 140 venture capital transactions of artificial intelligence and machine learning startups, accounting for about 19% of its total investment so far.

John Somorjai, executive vice president of Salesforce enterprise development and Salesforce Ventures, said: "for more than ten years, Salesforce Ventures has been investing in high-potential enterprise technology business, and these initial investments of the fund to generate artificial intelligence companies are fully in line with this strategy."

In fact, in the past decade, Salesforce Ventures has raised more than a dozen funds, ranging in size from $50 million to $125 million, and has also launched a series of vertically specific investment funds, including funds targeting specific regions such as Japan or Canada.

But before, Salesforce Ventures usually invested in enterprise cloud startups. After all, such investments may become more important for this software company because of the restrictions on large-scale acquisitions. For example, it has invested in star companies such as Zoom and DocuSign, and invested heavily in Snowflake IPO.

It is precisely because of its huge transaction scale and strategic value that Salesforce Ventures has always been regarded as the king of SaaS unicorns. At the same time, some people think that it may continue this myth in the AI field.

It is reported that the fund has invested in four start-up companies: You.com, a upstart search engine, just launched the generation of artificial intelligence a few months ago; Anthropic, an AI startup founded by former employees of OpenAI and highly sought after by VC, developed ChatGPT;; Cohere, a natural language processing (NLP) startup that recently cooperated with Google; And a secret startup called Hearth.AI

Specifically, Richard Socher, the founder of You.com, is the former chief scientist of Salesforce. The company was founded in 2020, and launched the AI chat function YouChat in search engines before Google and Microsoft at the end of last year. In terms of financing, at the end of 2021, You.com completed a $20 million seed round of financing led by Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce, and then completed a $25 million series of financing in the middle of last year.

Anthropic was founded in January, 2021. The latest report shows that shortly after accepting hundreds of millions of dollars from Google, it recently completed a new round of financing of 300 million dollars. After this financing, the value of Anthropic reached 4.1 billion dollars. Earlier, Anthropic raised $704 million through Series A and Series B financing in 2022.

Similarly, Cohere was founded in 2019, mainly providing access to large-scale language models and natural language processing (NLP) tools through APIs. Cohere has raised $170 million so far, including $125 million in Series B financing last year and $40 million in Series A financing in 2021. Earlier this year, it was reported in Reuters that Cohere was in talks to raise hundreds of millions of dollars in a round of financing, and the valuation of this startup may exceed 6 billion dollars after the completion of financing.

As for Hearth.AI, it should have been established in May, 2022. Except that it is the next generation management system (CRM) shown on its official website, we have not found any more public information. (Text/Zhang Xue, source/investment network)

"Out-of-the-box" has become a new outlet for ChatGPT entrepreneurship. Listen to what the entrants say.

ChatGPT-led artificial intelligence (AI) storm has become a new outlet, with Baidu, JD.COM, Tencent and other big companies scrambling for layout, Internet tycoons swarming in, and entrepreneurs eager to move. As OpenAI announced the API of ChatGPT model to the world, the market was completely ignited.

A month ago, Wang Huiwen, a billionaire and former co-founder of Meituan, started ChatGPT’s business with a "Hero Post". He invested 50 million US dollars to recruit wise men, and the slogan "Building China’s OpenAI" attracted countless attention as soon as it went out. Later, former Sogou CEO Wang Xiaochuan and former JD.COM Group Senior Vice President Zhou Bowen came out one after another. This wave of AI entrepreneurship has started in a mighty way.

Wang Shao, who is currently doing full-stack development, has long been keenly aware of the new entrepreneurial trend blown by ChatGPT. Since December last year, he has built his own application based on ChatGPT model. A few years ago, he worked in JD.COM, Jinshan and other big Internet companies.

Beside Wang Shao, like him, there are not a few entrepreneurs who feel this wave of technology. "Everyone’s response is very enthusiastic. In many communities, entrepreneurs are integrating the ChatGPT)API into their existing products, including bookkeeping and note-taking, or using the API to make new products. " In an interview with national business daily, he described it this way.

Abroad, entrepreneurs are also aiming at this new trend. Even silicon valley venture capitalists who are in the cold winter of science and technology have poured money into this frontier field. According to market analysis firm PitchBook Data Inc, global venture capital invested $1.3 billion in start-ups developing generative AI software through 78 transactions last year.

Entrepreneurs aim at "out of the box"

Wang Shao is one of the early entrepreneurs who entered the ChatGPT wave. HerAI, which he is developing, is a voice dialogue robot, in which many quick creation tools have been developed based on ChatGPT model, such as short video script, summary, weekly report generation, foreign language learning, cooking, programming and other functions.

He told reporters that HerAI was inspired by the famous movie Her. In this film, the hero Theodore and the artificial intelligence system OS1 have experienced a strange love.

"At present, some users may not be very good at communicating with AI, so we have made these out-of-the-box tools." He said. "Based on the current ChatGPT model, plus some other fine-tuning training can achieve better results."

In foreign countries, the direction that entrepreneurs aim at is similar to that of Wang Shao. Bret Greenstein, a partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers, said (foreign entrepreneurs)Most discussions focus on the "out-of-the-box" characteristics of generative AI.Anyone can access a system for public use directly through the Internet.

Recently, the opening of the ChatGPT model API has ignited the enthusiasm of many developers, especially the news that OpenAI has reduced the cost by 90%. In Wang Shao’s words, "this is a very big change", because for developers, the initial investment in making applications based on this model is mainly the cost of accessing the API.

"OpenAI wants to be an inclusive company for the whole world. Its goal is very big, and the price of the model may drop later. The current price is basically 1000 Chinese characters, and the cost is about 3 cents. At present, such income should cover the cost. " He said.

Every reporter noticed that since ChatGPT became popular all over the world, batches of AIGC companies have sprung up like mushrooms after rain, and many previously established AIGC startups have begun to enter the eyes of investors.

Vertical direction should be used as the main track.

Domestically, venture capital opportunities related to ChatGPT include developing large-scale language models of ChatGPT, which are being done by major Internet companies such as Baidu, JD.COM, Tencent and Alibaba.

Before developing his own AI application, Wang Shao also worked in several Internet giants such as JD.COM, Jinshan and Qunar. Wang Shao told every reporter,In addition to directly studying similar models, big manufacturers also have business applications based on such models. In his view, big manufacturers have their own advantages in making models similar to ChatGPT in China.

"ChatGPT can be regarded as a platform for content text output, and each country has different requirements for its own content security policy. If it is a language model, it has advantages from the domestic point of view. In addition, the model can also be particularly optimized for the Chinese environment. "

butFor the vast majority of entrepreneurs, Wang Shao believes that vertical application based on ChatGPT model is a more feasible direction.

"Most (entrepreneurs) are based on the ChatGPT model, making their own applications, fine-tuning them, and then combining them with products in their own industries, such as education, finance, insurance, and intelligent customer service." Wang Shao told every reporter.

Based on the foreign situation, Bret Greenstein also believes that if the enterprise data is used to fine-tune the basic language recognition model of such tools, countless enterprise software applications can be established.

In Wang Shao’s view, only companies with financial and technical confidence can develop their own models, and it may be difficult for startups to seize this opportunity. "If you make a (large language) model, it is only possible for head companies, such as Baidu and Ali, or companies that can continue to get large investments, because it burns money." He explained.

In fact, before the publication of ChatGPT, domestic AI startups based on the big model field have emerged one after another. Some startups have previously accessed the APIs of other language models (such as Curie, etc.) to explore the establishment of their own ecology. When ChatGPT has become a hot spot of global capital chasing, at this time, how to choose such startups will become a difficult problem?

Wang Shao believes that for these startups, embracing the new model or continuing to develop on the existing ecology may exist at the same time.

"ChatGPT is a general model. For some professional knowledge of specific industries, such as more professional grammar checking or virtual oral English teachers, it is still necessary to train separately. (These startups) can combine the original model with the ChatGPT model, and the functions that can’t be done can be handed over to ChatGPT, and the original functions can continue to be used. " He told reporters.

Subdivide the field to find opportunities

When Baidu, JD.COM, Tencent, Alibaba and other big companies entered the market, the entrepreneurial tide also swept through. How can entrepreneurs survive in the cracks without being squeezed out of the track by big companies? Wang Shao believes that the answer is obvious, and segmentation is the key.

"Large companies generally start with general-purpose products. At the beginning, they will not pay special attention to a certain sub-industry." He said. "(doing) entrepreneurial projects, you can cut in from a certain segment. When you achieve the ultimate in this subdivision, your accumulation of user needs is not easy to be directly copied. Then it will be more competitive to expand into other fields. "

"Because in essence, ChatGPT is a general model and is not good at certain fields. Many entrepreneurs have to specialize in a certain field and can only combine other AI models or fine-tune the model. " Wang Shao told reporters.

The reporter noted that in addition to HerAI, the first batch of entrepreneurs accessing ChatGPT API in China have begun to exert their efforts in various fields, such as cooking, education, shopping and so on.

In Wang Shao’s imagination, he also intends to continue to explore in the segmentation field, for example, he plans to integrate more third-party AI services. HerAI has been online for several months. Judging from the user feedback he obtained, "the most appeal may be not limited to the output of words, but to directly generate PPT, tables and even videos."

ChatGPT’s east wind has indeed brought many opportunities, but to truly gain a foothold and play its own world, Wang Shao bluntly said that there are still great challenges, both technically and financially.

"Like I said,It is a great challenge to embed the third-party AI service directly into the conversational chat, which needs constant exploration and verification. In addition, there is a great demand for manpower and funds."He said.
